Sanwo-Olu Must Tackle Lagos Refuse, Road and Security Crisis Before Leaving Office

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu began his tenure with considerable goodwill. I admired his decision to continue useful projects started by Akinwunmi Ambode, reconcile political differences and appoint capable professionals into government. Those actions suggested maturity and a focus on governance over political vendettas. However, Lagos now appears to be struggling with worsening refuse disposal, poor roads and insecurity. Residents increasingly report being harassed by street gangs and touts in broad daylight, while heaps of refuse have become common in several areas. These are public-health and safety concerns that require sustained action, not occasional enforcement exercises. The government has acknowledged the waste crisis and promised evacuation, but many residents believe conditions have continued to deteriorate. The governor, police leadership and relevant agencies must restore order, protect motorists and residents, and address illegal dumping across the state. Sanwo-Olu still has time to change the direction of his final months in office. He should act urgently to improve sanitation, roads and security so that his legacy is defined by a strong finish rather than the impression of a government that has lost momentum.
