FG Seeks New Contractor as Benin-Asaba Highway Deteriorates
The Federal Ministry of Works is seeking to bring in another contractor to repair the 125-kilometre Benin-Asaba Highway after alleging major defaults by the current concessionaire, Benin-Asaba Expressway Concession Company Limited. The road links Edo and Delta states and serves as a major route for passengers, freight and trade between the South-South, South-East and parts of the South-West. Residents protested on August 16 over its poor condition and the slow pace of repairs. The ministry said sections of stable asphalt were scarified without prompt reconstruction, exposing the road base to rain and worsening damage. Although the concession has not been formally terminated, the Works Minister has proposed a mutual termination while the ministry finalises plans for an intervention contractor. The concessionaire has been directed to restore affected sections, but the Federal Controller of Works in Edo said no meaningful intervention had been recorded two weeks after the minister's engagement.
