NAPTIP Secures Over 20 SGBV Convictions, Including Three Life Sentences

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons says it has secured more than 20 convictions for sexual and gender-based violence offences since January 2026. Three of the convictions resulted in life sentences, with many of the cases involving rape. NAPTIP also said it rescued more than 3,000 people from critical situations during the period and arrested several suspects who are now being prosecuted. The agency said it is strengthening its response through collaboration with the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, relevant government bodies and communities. It also urged journalists to report cases in ways that protect survivors’ privacy, dignity and safety. NAPTIP added that its new SGBV media corps will support deeper reporting on the causes of sexual and gender-based violence and institutional responses to it.
