What Determines Wages Beyond Minimum Wage? A Worker-Focused View
This article examines the factors that shape wages in a free-market economy, with particular attention to minimum wage, living costs and workers’ bargaining power. It argues that wages should be assessed alongside the actual cost of living in each location. The discussion identifies rent, taxes, statutory deductions, experience, specialised skills, previous pay, negotiation ability, employer philosophy and business capital as key influences on earnings. It also argues that lower production costs or a government-set minimum wage do not automatically lead to higher pay. For workers, the article recommends building retirement savings and investments over time. It also proposes that labour unions use the cost of housing as a practical benchmark when negotiating for improved wages.
