Obasanjo: Nigeria Has the Resources to Defeat Poverty, but Lacks Policy Consistency

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says Nigeria has no reason to remain poor, given its natural resources, arable land, water, energy reserves and human capital. Speaking in an interview, he said the country could produce enough food for local consumption and export if governments sustained agricultural and development policies. He also pointed to Nigerians at home and abroad as a largely underused economic asset. Obasanjo blamed policy reversals, corruption, crude-oil theft and revenue leakages for holding back growth. He urged long-term planning, fiscal accountability and political commitment to food security and better management of national resources.
