NLC, Falana and Activists Demand Petrol Price Cut as Hardship Deepens
The Nigeria Labour Congress, Femi Falana and members of the Joint Action Front have urged Nigerians to resist rising petrol prices and worsening living conditions. They spoke at a Lagos symposium held in honour of labour activist Abiodun Aremu. The NLC said the removal of petrol subsidy, higher transport fares, food prices, electricity tariffs and the weak naira have severely reduced workers’ purchasing power. It noted that the ₦70,000 minimum wage has lost value as petrol prices rose from about ₦668 per litre in July 2024 to above ₦1,400 in some locations. Labour said it had given the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum, issued on October 9, to reduce petrol prices. It also called for action to stabilise the naira, curb inflation and improve local refining capacity. I believe removing subsidy without a reliable backup plan has worsened poverty. Those who protested fuel-price increases under the previous administration should also speak up now.
