Lagos Targets 3,500MW Power Supply to Cut Persistent Blackouts

Lagos State has unveiled plans to raise available electricity supply to about 3,500MW, aiming to reduce persistent blackouts affecting homes, businesses and industries. At a power-sector town hall in Marina, officials said Lagos needs more than 6,000MW but currently receives less than 1GW from the national grid. The state has secured 400MW from private producers and hopes to add about 2GW through gas-fired, embedded and renewable power projects. Officials stressed that new generation alone will not solve the problem. They identified gas supply, transmission capacity, distribution networks, smart metering and bill payment as key issues requiring coordinated action. The proposed Clean Lagos Electricity Market will begin with an initial 500MW model focused on reliable delivery, metering, transparent billing and payment assurance. Stakeholders plan to review progress within six months.
