Russian Officer Defects to Ukraine After Secretly Passing Battlefield Intelligence
Lt. Lev Stupnikov, a Russian communications officer, secretly supplied Ukrainian intelligence with Russian troop positions, radio details and battle plans during the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian sources say the information contributed to several strikes on Russian forces near Vuhledar. Stupnikov defected across the front line in July 2024 after months of operating inside his brigade. He later joined the Russian Volunteer Corps, a unit of Russian citizens fighting alongside Ukraine against President Vladimir Putin’s government. His mother and younger sister were later evacuated from Russia and are living in an undisclosed location. Stupnikov said he no longer considered himself bound by his military oath, arguing that Russia’s leadership had abandoned the freedom and constitutional order he believed he had sworn to defend.
