A federal court in Boston has handed a Nigerian national, Matthew Akande, an eight-year prison term for orchestrating a cyber fraud scheme that stole over $1.3 million from the U.S. government through fake tax filings. Authorities say Akande and his accomplices hacked Massachusetts tax firms between 2016 and 2021. They used phishing emails and Warzone RAT malware to steal clients’ personal data and file more than 1,000 fraudulent returns seeking over $8.1 million in refunds. Arrested in October 2024 at London’s Heathrow Airport and extradited in March 2025, Akande was also ordered to pay $1,393,230 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release after his sentence.
