Why Nigeria's Minimum Wage Leaves Youth Jobless and Struggling
Many Nigerians dismiss countries like Albania or Afghanistan as poor. Yet Albania’s minimum wage is about $517 (≈₦710,000) and Afghanistan’s is $80 (≈₦110,000). These figures eclipse what most workers earn here. Millions of young people in Nigeria remain unemployed with no government support. They still pay bills, buy essentials and face mockery for being ‘‘No Future Ambition,’’ while battling stress and depression behind closed doors. Our leaders spend billions on pilgrimages, ‘‘rehabilitating’’ terrorists and renovating unused projects. Yet education, science and technology receive little funding and job creation is sidelined. If the system worked, opportunistic influencers wouldn’t thrive on our frustrations. Nigerian workers today rank among the poorest globally.
