ECOWAS Urged to Document Its Peacekeeping Legacy and Counter False Narratives

ECOWAS Political Affairs Director Babatunde Afolabi has urged the regional bloc to document its peace and security interventions, saying West Africans must tell their own history and challenge inaccurate accounts of the organisation’s role. Speaking at the launch of publications on ECOWAS peacebuilding in Abuja, Afolabi said the records would preserve the experiences of member states, troops, communities and journalists involved in efforts to restore stability in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau. The publications include accounts of ECOWAS peacebuilding efforts, after-action review reports and a study of the organisation’s peacemaking experience. Former ECOMOG commanders and journalists who covered the Liberian conflict were also recognised. Afolabi said the material should help young people, researchers and policymakers draw lessons from past interventions as West Africa confronts terrorism, violent extremism, political instability and military takeovers.
