Osun Governorship Poll: Police Bar Amotekun, Vigilantes From Election Security
The Nigeria Police Force has barred Amotekun, vigilante groups and other non-state security outfits from taking part in security operations during Osun State’s governorship election on Saturday, 15 August 2026. Police said only authorised security agencies may protect polling units, electoral materials, collation centres, officials, observers, journalists and voters across the state’s 30 local government areas. The ban covers Amotekun, the Joint Civilian Task Force, hunters’ associations, neighbourhood watch groups and community-based security outfits. The Force warned political parties, candidates and supporters not to arm, engage or deploy any of the prohibited groups. It said anyone involved in ballot snatching, voter intimidation, vote buying, violence or thuggery would be arrested and prosecuted, regardless of political affiliation.
