Why a Betting Licence in Nigeria Now Depends on Your State
Nigeria no longer has a single, straightforward answer to whether a betting platform is licensed. Following the Supreme Court ruling on lotteries and games of chance, states now play the central regulatory role, while the FCT operates under a separate system. A review of Lagos, Oyo, Enugu, Edo, Cross River, Kano and the FCT found major differences in licensing fees, public operator registers and consumer complaint channels. Lagos and the FCT publish operator lists that users can check, while other jurisdictions provide different levels of public information. Published sports-betting licence fees range from ₦5 million in Kano to ₦10 million in Cross River and ₦20 million in Oyo, excluding other levies and compliance costs. The state reciprocity framework may reduce duplicate licensing in participating states, but bettors and operators still need to verify licences by jurisdiction, gaming category and validity date.
