South-East Lawyers Demand Answers on Missing and Detained Persons

A coalition of lawyers representing families of detained and missing persons in the South-East has asked the Federal Government to account for people allegedly held without trial during security operations in the region. At a press conference in Umuahia on August 13, the lawyers alleged that some detainees had faced prolonged detention, torture, poor conditions and enforced disappearance. They also demanded a full explanation over the reported death in custody of Calista Ifedi, including the release of her remains to her family. The legal team said it has gathered affidavits, medical reports, photographs and testimonies from affected families. It plans to pursue legal action against relevant federal and state authorities, seeking the production or release of detainees, compensation where violations are established, and prosecution where evidence supports criminal liability. The lawyers urged the authorities to charge suspects with recognisable offences and try them in civilian courts, or release those against whom there is no admissible evidence. They also called for investigations into alleged torture, unlawful killings and disappearances.
