Kano’s Economy: Population, Industries and Revenue Potential

Kano has an estimated population of 17 million, a per-capita income of about US$1,200 and an economy estimated at US$20.4 billion. The state is a long-standing centre of trade and commerce. Its key industries include footwear, bags, garments, plastics, detergent, groundnut oil and textiles. Kannywood also remains an important part of its entertainment economy. Major agricultural products include dairy, cattle, sheep, rice, maize, soybeans, cotton, onions, tomatoes, garlic and ginger. Kano also depends on imports such as petroleum products, vehicles, industrial machinery and cement. The post argues that Kano could raise as much as US$8 billion in government revenue, or 40 percent of its estimated GDP, if public institutions improve tax collection and economic management. This estimate would require clearer supporting data and a practical revenue plan.
