Cross River Government, PDP Trade Blame Over Calabar South Violence
The Cross River Government has denied involvement in the recent violence in Calabar South, linking the disturbance to alleged divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The government said gunshots and unrest disrupted PDP-related consultations, leaving some people injured and property damaged. It maintained that the dispute stemmed from disagreements among PDP factions over party leadership and candidates. The PDP rejected the claim of an internal crisis and accused the Bassey Otu administration of trying to intimidate the opposition. The party said videos of the incident showed people chanting in support of the APC and Governor Otu. The state government has also demanded a retraction and apology over an allegation that Governor Otu influenced a traditional ruler's decision not to receive a PDP factional candidate. It said legal action may be considered if the demand is ignored.
