40 Years After His Assassination, Dele Giwa’s Journalism Lives On

Journalists, media leaders, family members and admirers gathered in Lagos on October 19, 2026, to unveil Dele Giwa’s Granite Journalism, a collection celebrating the life and work of the late Newswatch founding editor-in-chief. Edited by Ray Ekpu, the book contains Giwa’s articles, interviews and tributes from colleagues. Speakers including Sam Amuka-Pemu, Segun Osoba, Nduka Obaigbena and Simon Kolawole reflected on his fearless writing, distinctive style and commitment to holding power accountable. The event also revisited the unresolved pain of Giwa’s 1986 parcel-bomb assassination. Forty years later, his colleagues said his writings remain an important lesson in press freedom, professional courage and journalism in the public interest.
