Edo Court Workers Protest Proposed Changes to Judiciary Financial Autonomy Law
Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) members in Edo State protested at the House of Assembly over proposed bills affecting financial autonomy for the judiciary and legislature. The union urged lawmakers to withdraw the bills, arguing that repealing or amending the 2023 financial autonomy law could weaken the independence of both arms of government. JUSUN said workers fought for the autonomy arrangement for a decade and would resist any move that undermines it. Speaker Yekini Idaiye said the use of the word “repeal” was an error. He maintained that the Assembly intends to amend the laws and establish an agency to promote accountability and ensure projects are properly executed under the autonomy arrangement.
