Tinubu Urges AU Action Over Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

President Bola Tinubu has urged the African Union to take urgent action over recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks on Africans and other foreign nationals in South Africa. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at an AU meeting in Luanda, Angola, Tinubu said the attacks undermine African unity, solidarity and peaceful coexistence. He asked that the issue be placed on the agenda of the AU’s January 2027 summit. While acknowledging South Africa’s right to enforce its immigration laws, Tinubu said this must not endanger the dignity or safety of other Africans. He also called for stronger African-led conflict prevention, sustainable funding for AU peace operations and tighter cooperation to stop arms from reaching terrorist groups.
