Why Clearly Defined Boundaries Matter for Peace in Nigeria

I believe clearly defined community and traditional boundaries can reduce fear of marginalisation and improve cooperation across Nigeria. Lesotho, which is surrounded by South Africa, shows that political borders and territorial arrangements can take different forms. Communities that understand and protect their historical territories may be better placed to negotiate their interests peacefully. Even among the Ijesa, settlements have distinct territories under traditional leadership despite sharing the same ethnic identity. In my view, this shows that shared ethnicity does not remove the need for clear local boundaries and mutual respect. Clear borders will not end every conflict, especially where religion, humanitarian crises or serious abuses are involved. However, they can make responsibilities clearer and help neighbouring communities resolve disputes through dialogue rather than intimidation or violence.
