Minimum Wage Talks Must Include Private Employers, Editorial Says
Nigeria’s minimum-wage negotiations should involve government, organised labour and private employers. Employers are expected to pay a large share of the workforce, so excluding them could make any agreement difficult to implement. Workers need better pay as inflation, transport, food and housing costs continue to rise. However, many businesses, especially small and medium-sized firms, are also facing high energy costs, costly credit and weak consumer spending. A sustainable agreement should protect workers without forcing businesses into layoffs, recruitment freezes, price increases or closure. The process should follow a genuine tripartite model that considers workers’ welfare, employers’ ability to pay and the wider economic climate.
