Profit-Driven Designs Fuel Nigeria’s Building Failures, Experts Demand Smart Sustainable Solutions
Construction experts warn that weak design standards, profit-driven practices and poor oversight are at the root of rising building failures in Nigeria. At a strategic industry session led by consultant Chinedum Evans Ewe, GreenArc Global’s Managing Director, Arc. Trevor Gemade, argued that many structures collapse because they lack performance-driven design. He highlighted untrained project leads, poor site orientation and weak safety standards as major contributors. Gemade urged a shift to performance-based models. “We simulate airflow, heat gain and environmental response before construction,” he said, stressing that validated sustainability measures reduce risks and long-term maintenance costs. Industry leaders agreed that stronger professional standards, transparent procurement and adaptive designs are vital. They believe smart construction systems will help Nigerian cities adapt, recover and evolve.
