INEC Extends Voter Registration Deadline to July 24, Introduces Online Self-Service Option

INEC Extends Voter Registration Deadline to July 24, Introduces Online Self-Service Option

INEC has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration deadline. The exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, will now close on July 24, 2026 instead of July 10. This follows feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to give more Nigerians a chance to register. From July 8, 2026, first-time voters can register online via INEC’s new self-service portal. The system provides step-by-step guidance and allows biometric capture and identity verification on personal devices. Robust checks are built in to preserve the accuracy and credibility of the voter register. INEC urges all eligible citizens to take advantage of the extended deadline and the new digital registration option. The commission remains committed to a fair, inclusive, and accessible voter registration process.

It looks like this extension came after pressure from parties and groups; not sure it will boost actual registration numbers though.

Online registration might exclude rural voters with limited internet access, so this change isn't necessarily more inclusive.

Start your registration early and double-check all details online to avoid last-minute hiccups before the July 24 cutoff.
