Should Nigeria Deploy Prisoners Against Boko Haram and Bandits?
I suggest a controversial strategy inspired by the film *The Condemned*. Prisoners could receive military training and be deployed under strict supervision to combat Boko Haram, ISWAP and bandit groups in areas such as Sambisa, Lake Chad and Zamfara. Under this proposal, prisoners who complete missions successfully could earn a reduction of their sentences. The idea assumes they would be strongly motivated by the prospect of freedom. However, this would raise serious legal, ethical and security concerns. It could endanger the prisoners and the public, while also creating risks of defection, abuse and poor accountability. Can any version of this proposal work within Nigeria’s laws and human-rights obligations?
