Salman Rushdie’s Attacker Convicted on US Terrorism Charges

Hadi Matar, the man serving a 25-year sentence for the 2022 stabbing of British-Indian author Salman Rushdie, has been convicted in the United States on federal terrorism-related charges. A jury in Buffalo, New York, found Matar guilty of attempting to provide material support to Hezbollah, carrying out terrorism across national boundaries and providing material support to terrorists. He could face a life sentence when he is sentenced on November 3. Prosecutors said Matar had researched the 1989 fatwa against Rushdie, collected Hezbollah-related material and prepared for the attack. Rushdie, who lost sight in one eye after being stabbed at a literary event, testified about the lasting impact of the assault. Defence lawyers argued that the stabbing did not amount to terrorism, but prosecutors said the evidence showed a deliberate attack motivated by violent extremist ideology.
