Akume Says Tinubu’s Reforms Are Stabilising Nigeria’s Economy
Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume says the Tinubu administration’s removal of the petrol subsidy, foreign-exchange reforms and fiscal changes were necessary to prevent an economic collapse. Speaking at Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary Lecture in Abuja, Akume said the reforms were beginning to produce results. He cited World Bank figures showing 4.2% real GDP growth in the first half of 2026, while acknowledging that growth must translate into jobs and higher incomes. He also highlighted road, rail, port and housing projects, as well as expanded CNG conversion, agricultural support, student loans, primary healthcare and social-protection programmes. Akume said the government would not return to the petrol subsidy regime and would continue investing in security and infrastructure.
