Russia Begins Parliamentary Vote as Anti-War Candidates Face Restrictions
Russia has begun a three-day parliamentary election for the 450-seat State Duma, its first since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. The ruling United Russia party is seeking to retain its dominance in the lower house. The vote is also being held in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine, a move Kyiv rejects as illegitimate. Candidates and parties opposed to the war have faced disqualifications and other restrictions. The liberal Yabloko party was barred from the nationwide party-list ballot, although some of its candidates remain in individual races. Voting opened amid reports of a major Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow and other Russian regions. Russian officials said hundreds of drones were intercepted, but the figures could not immediately be independently verified. The attacks disrupted some Moscow airport operations as the election began.
