Over 80 Feared Dead After Migrant Boat Drifts for 26 Days Toward Canary Islands

More than 80 migrants, including a baby, are feared dead after a fishing boat reportedly drifted in the Atlantic for 26 days while travelling from Gambia to Spain’s Canary Islands. Rescuers found 45 survivors and five bodies aboard the vessel about 120 kilometres off Gran Canaria. The boat was said to have left Gambia with 128 people on board, meaning dozens remain unaccounted for. The Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands is among Europe’s deadliest migration crossings. Migration monitors say about 1,300 people had died trying to reach the Spanish islands by June this year.
