Search Underway After Ferry Carrying 243 Goes Missing in Java Sea
Indonesian authorities have launched a search after the Virgo Transport 8, carrying 243 people, lost contact during an overnight journey from Surabaya to Banjarmasin in severe weather. The vessel was last located around 2 a.m. on Sunday, about 150 kilometres south of Banjarmasin. It reportedly sent a distress update about rough conditions before communication stopped. A six-member rescue team has been sent to the ferry’s last known location. Authorities have not confirmed whether the vessel sank or released details about the passengers and crew.
