Nine Miners Die After Rain Floods Mining Pit in Bauchi

Nine contract miners have died after heavy rainfall flooded Pit 3 at Zurfi Mining Company in Nahuta village, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The incident occurred at about 9:45 p.m. on September 26 while the workers were underground. One miner was reportedly electrocuted and later confirmed dead at General Hospital Kashere in neighbouring Gombe State. Police officers, local vigilantes and the company carried out rescue efforts, using water pumps to drain the pit. Eight more bodies were recovered the following morning and taken to the hospital. Police said the company is registered and licensed, while investigations continue into whether adequate safety measures were in place before the flooding.
