Tinubu, FBI and DEA Oppose Expanded Discovery in US FOIA Records Case
Lawyers for President Bola Tinubu, the FBI and the US Drug Enforcement Administration have filed separate motions in a Washington, D.C., court over Aaron Greenspan’s Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. Greenspan is seeking US records connected to past investigations involving Tinubu, including FBI interview records and documents linked to a 1993 civil forfeiture case. Tinubu’s lawyers argued that Greenspan’s request for discovery from private parties goes beyond the purpose of a FOIA case, which is focused on government agencies’ records. The FBI and DEA have asked the court to rule in their favour, saying their searches were adequate and that some documents are protected by exemptions covering grand-jury materials, confidential sources, prosecutorial strategy and safety concerns. Greenspan’s claim that cyberattacks on his legal transparency website were connected to the case was described by Tinubu’s legal team as speculative.
