2027 Elections: Political Parties Sign Peace Accord in Abuja
Political figures and party representatives gathered in Abuja on August 18 to sign a National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting was attended by representatives of presidential, governorship and National Assembly candidates, alongside INEC officials and party leaders. Peter Obi called for an election in which votes genuinely count and urged Nigerians not to support candidates or parties that violate the accord. He also asked contestants to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the campaign period. Representing President Bola Tinubu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume said the APC would uphold the accord and reject violence, hate speech, misinformation and incitement. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan said the commission would remain neutral and work towards a credible election, with preparations continuing across more than 176,000 polling units. The accord calls on political actors to pursue issue-based campaigns and peaceful conduct before, during and after the polls.
