Nigeria Records More Terror-Related Deaths Than Somalia and Afghanistan
Recent reports place Nigeria among the top five countries globally for terrorism fatalities. In 2025 alone, the nation recorded 750 terror-related deaths, a 46% jump from the previous year. Boko Haram and ISWAP were responsible for around 80% of these fatalities. Armed groups and bandits have killed over 10,200 civilians since mid-2023, with mass attacks in Benue, Plateau and Katsina driving much of the toll. Meanwhile, faith-based violence remains acute, with nearly 3,500 Christians targeted for their faith in Nigeria during the same period. By comparison, Somalia’s terror deaths remain lower despite persistent Al-Shabaab attacks, while Afghanistan’s large-scale violence has declined since the Taliban takeover, shifting toward targeted repression. This data underscores the severity and breadth of Nigeria’s security crisis.
