Slain NYSC Member’s Father Says Army Troops Later Admitted ‘Mistake’ in Shooting
A serving NYSC member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, was shot dead in his room at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, Abuja on April 25. His father, Sani Jimoh, says the Nigerian Army initially denied any wrongdoing but later told him the fatal shooting was a mistake. According to Jimoh, soldiers said they were chasing a thief and entered the compound after seeing altered barbed wire. He was told his son blocked their way as they tried to open his door and that the shooting happened in the confusion. A military delegation and the local police later called the incident an unfortunate error. Eyewitness accounts from Jamiu’s sister describe how soldiers dragged her out, showed her broken wire and a window, then revealed her brother’s body. She also alleged that vigilantes were brought in to mop up the blood. Their mother, who was out of town, learned of the killing from neighbours. Family and friends remember Abdulsamad as calm and community-minded.
