South African Woman Sentenced to 20 Years for Deaths of Three Great-Grandchildren
A South African court has sentenced 71-year-old Susana Johanna de Villiers to 20 years in prison for the deaths of her three great-grandchildren. The Worcester Regional Court heard that De Villiers drove her vehicle off Bainskloof Pass near Worcester in November 2021 after collecting the children from their caregiver. Caleb Booysen, 8, Gradwell Booysen, 5, and Joshua Booysen, 2, died from injuries sustained in the crash. She received 20 years for each of the three murder convictions, with the sentences to run concurrently. Although De Villiers cited emotional struggles, a psychiatric assessment found that she understood her actions were wrong and was able to act on that understanding.
