Presidency Challenges Atiku to Clarify Proposed Targeted Fuel Subsidy

The Presidency has accused Atiku Abubakar of giving conflicting explanations about his proposed fuel-subsidy policy ahead of the 2027 election. Presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga said Atiku’s aides initially offered different accounts of whether a restored subsidy would be temporary or remain until local refining and market conditions improve. Atiku later said he would restore a targeted subsidy to ease Nigerians’ hardship. The Presidency said Atiku should state who would benefit, how the subsidy would be funded, what it would cost and the conditions for ending it. It argued that the cost-of-living crisis also requires action on food production, insecurity, exchange rates, logistics and other economic pressures.
