Police Extortion in Nigeria: Where to Report Officers and What Happens Next
Police officers are expected to investigate crimes and protect citizens. But when an officer allegedly demands money for bail, the release of a seized item or freedom from detention, Nigerians need to know where to seek help. Complaints can be reported through the Nigeria Police Force Complaint Response Unit, the Police Public Complaints Committee and, where disciplinary action is required, the Police Service Commission. Serious allegations that may amount to criminal offences can also be handled through appropriate investigative and prosecutorial channels. Anyone reporting an incident should keep payment records, messages, call details, dates, locations, the police station involved and identifying details of the officer. Complainants should also request a reference number and retain records of every follow-up. Accountability should go beyond receiving complaints. Nigerians deserve to know how many extortion cases are investigated, how quickly they are resolved and what sanctions follow when misconduct is proven.
