Beyond Downloads: How Responsible AI Can Build Trusted Fintechs in Africa
Africa’s fintech sector has expanded access to digital financial services, but downloads and registered accounts do not guarantee lasting growth. The real test is whether customers trust a platform, complete transactions reliably and keep using services that solve everyday financial problems. AI can help fintechs improve fraud detection, customer support, credit assessment and personalised product experiences. However, it should be used to address clear customer needs, such as difficult onboarding, failed transactions, bill-payment reminders or cash-flow insights for small businesses. Automated support must also allow customers to reach human agents when they face fraud, disputes or sensitive issues. Fintechs should measure meaningful outcomes, including activation, first successful transactions, repeat usage, retention and issue resolution. AI cannot replace clear product design, reliable services or transparent fees. Sustainable growth depends on combining technology with customer-centred marketing, strong data protection, human oversight and systems that customers can understand and challenge.
