INEC: Deepfakes Pose Greater Threat to 2027 Election Integrity Than System Hacking
INEC says voter accreditation and result collation will not be fully automated during the 2027 general elections. The commission also says no autonomous system will decide candidate qualification or any other critical electoral matter. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan warned that deepfake videos and audio could be used to spread fake announcements on candidate withdrawals, election postponements or results. He said the commission has set up an AI unit with tools to detect manipulated content and wants technology platforms to act against unlabelled synthetic media impersonating candidates or officials. The commission says 10 of the 14 major Electoral Act 2026 milestones have been completed ahead of an election involving more than 103 million registered voters across 774 local government areas.
