Onaiyekan Urges Opposition to Unite Behind One Candidate for 2027
Former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has urged opposition leaders to unite behind a single candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. He warned that multiple opposition candidates could split votes and allow the ruling party to retain power by default. Although he said he has a preferred opposition figure, he argued that personal preferences should not stand in the way of a credible, united alternative. Onaiyekan also urged Nigerians to use their voter cards to assess leaders' performance and demand accountability. He said the key question ahead of 2027 is whether voters will be offered a viable alternative to the current government.
