Peter Obi Backs Fuel Subsidy Removal, Rejects Atiku’s Call for Its Return

Peter Obi Backs Fuel Subsidy Removal, Rejects Atiku’s Call for Its Return

Peter Obi has said Nigeria should not restore fuel subsidy simply because the savings from its removal have been mismanaged. Reacting to Atiku Abubakar’s pledge to bring back the subsidy if elected in 2027, Obi argued that the policy should have been implemented with clear benefits for Nigerians. He said the funds saved should have gone into measures that reduce hardship and improve public services. Speaking at a Nigerian Bar Association conference in Port Harcourt, Obi said the reported proceeds from subsidy removal, estimated at about ₦16 trillion, must be properly accounted for and invested for the public good. He added that his leadership plan supports an organised removal of subsidy with practical alternatives for citizens.
