Senate Rules Out Further Electoral Act Changes Before 2027 Elections
The Senate says it will not reopen the Electoral Act 2026 for further amendments before the 2027 general elections. Lawmakers say the law has already been passed, assented to and is being used for party primaries and candidate nominations. The position follows a Supreme Court judgment restoring provisions on party membership registers, participation in primaries, and methods for nominating candidates. The court overturned an earlier Court of Appeal decision that had struck down the sections. The restored provisions have raised questions about possible challenges to some candidates’ membership status, waivers and nomination processes. However, major political parties have maintained that their candidates remain valid, while the Senate says any further review can only be considered after the elections.
