Akpabio Says No Acting President Despite Tinubu, Shettima Being Abroad

Senate President Godswill Akpabio says there is no vacancy in the Presidency despite President Bola Tinubu being on an extended working leave in Europe and Vice-President Kashim Shettima attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The African Democratic Congress and former AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore had raised concerns over who is exercising presidential powers. They cited Section 145 of the Constitution, which provides for the Vice-President to act when the President transmits a declaration of absence or fails to do so after 21 days. Speaking in Ikot Ekpene, Akpabio said Tinubu remains in charge and can govern remotely. He added that Shettima's UN assignment does not create a constitutional vacancy.
