Tekno Says Oliver De Coque and Other Legends Also Shaped Afrobeats
Singer Tekno has sparked a debate over the origins of Afrobeats, arguing that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti should not be regarded as its only originator. Speaking in a recent interview, Tekno said highlife icons such as Oliver De Coque also helped shape the sound now associated with Afrobeats. He believes Fela received wider recognition partly because he performed internationally with his band. Tekno acknowledged Fela's major influence and said the late icon inspired his song “Rara.” However, he added that Oliver De Coque and other Eastern highlife musicians were closer to his own musical upbringing, as his father played their music at home.
