Atiku’s Fuel Subsidy Promise Could Reshape the 2027 Election
Atiku has said he would restore fuel subsidies if elected, and I believe he would follow through on that promise. In my view, former President Buhari kept the subsidy in place despite its cost to public finances because its removal would have hit the North especially hard. Tinubu ultimately became the president who carried out the removal. If the economic hardship has been severe in Southern Nigeria since the subsidy ended, I believe the impact in many Northern communities has been far worse. That is why Atiku’s subsidy promise could become a major issue in 2027, with the outcome likely to be heavily influenced by Northern voters.
