Navy Uncovers 40,000-Litre Illegal Refinery Site in Bonny, Three Suspects Held
The Nigerian Navy and the Federal Government’s Inter-Agency Task Force on Petroleum Theft have uncovered an illegal refinery site with an estimated 40,000-litre capacity in the creeks of Bonny Island, Rivers State. Naval officers said the facility was discovered through intelligence shared by security agencies. The site was reportedly still being prepared for operation, allowing operatives to intervene before crude oil processing began. The Navy said the refinery was one of the largest discoveries made by its Bonny base in recent months. Three suspects allegedly connected to financing the operation are in custody, while authorities have approached the court for orders to deal with the site and prosecute those involved. The task force said it has secured at least 137 convictions for hydrocarbon-related offences since its inauguration in March 2025. Officials say surveillance and intelligence operations will continue across Bonny’s waterways and remote communities.
