Why I Believe Ilorin Could Host Nigeria’s Next Inland Refinery
I believe Ilorin could complement Lagos as an inland refining and energy hub. Lagos will remain better positioned for coastal refining and international exports, while Ilorin could focus on supplying North-Central Nigeria, the North and nearby African markets. Crude could reach Ilorin through dedicated pipelines, expanded petroleum infrastructure, storage facilities and, where viable, rail links. Locating refining capacity closer to inland consumers could reduce distribution distances, road congestion, storage needs and logistics risks. A refinery could also support an energy and industrial corridor for petrochemicals, gas processing, fertiliser, power generation, logistics and engineering services. I invite serious investors to study the proposal and determine whether the economics can support an inland energy gateway in Ilorin.
