Clerics in Politics Must Not Downplay Nigeria’s Insecurity

I do not believe Islamic clerics should be excluded from politics. They have the right to participate in public life, but they must uphold truth, decency and compassion while doing so. My concern is with Sheikh Yahaya Jingir’s reported remarks suggesting that claims of widespread insecurity are propaganda. At a time when Nigerians face kidnappings, killings and fear on major roads, such comments can appear dismissive of victims and their families. Defending a government should not require denying the realities people experience. Religious leaders who engage in politics should offer honest counsel, respect public pain and avoid statements that could make insecurity seem insignificant. President Tinubu also needs truthful advice from those around him. Nigeria’s security challenges cannot be solved if reports of violence and kidnapping are treated as mere propaganda.
