Adeleke, Tinubu and the Lesson for Emotionally Invested Supporters
Osun’s governorship election drew national attention because many Nigerians saw it as a test of public feeling toward President Bola Tinubu and the APC ahead of 2027. Davido’s support for his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, also amplified the campaign and its online appeal. I have always felt Adeleke’s dancing and viral campaign moments sometimes overshadowed serious policy conversations. Although supporters cite salary and pension payments as achievements, I do not think public officials should receive extraordinary praise for meeting obligations owed to workers and retirees. After Adeleke’s victory, his public pledge of support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition surprised many people who had treated the election as an anti-APC statement. His meetings with APC figures and his appearance at an APC gathering have reinforced the view that political leaders often work across party lines when their interests align. My takeaway is simple: supporters should avoid becoming emotionally attached to politicians. Parties may differ in name and rhetoric, but politicians can quickly find common ground when it benefits them.
