Shehu Sani Backs Katsina Emir’s Right to Speak on Insecurity
Former Kaduna Central senator Shehu Sani has defended the Emir of Katsina’s right to speak publicly about insecurity in the state. He said leaders should be held accountable for the safety of the people under their care. Sani recalled the 2022 dispute involving Professor Sani Abubakar Lugga, then Waziri of Katsina. Lugga resigned his traditional title after reportedly receiving a query over comments he made about banditry, killings, kidnappings and the effect of insecurity on schools and rural communities. Lugga maintained that he spoke at the Ilorin peace and conflict-resolution event as an academic, not as a representative of the Katsina Emirate Council. Sani said the episode raises wider questions about freedom of expression when traditional leaders and public figures address security challenges.
